Architecture in Blockley is reminiscent of more affluent times, the bulk of its dwellings being built during the 17th and 18th century.

Around Blockley
Blockley High street
Blockley is not on a main road so escapes the tourist traffic yet it is perfectly situated to tour the Cotswolds and its many local attractions.  These are too  numerous to include all, but examples are Batsford Arboretum, historic Chipping Campden and its famous church, Stow-on-the-Wold, Hidcote and Mill Dene Gardens.  Cheltenham and Oxford are all within easy distance.  View 'Around Blockley', 'Wider Area' and 'Things to Do'  for more detailed information.

Blockley has all the charm and character of a traditional Cotswold village with its medieval church, brook and many beautiful old buildings.  There are two pubs, The Crown Hotel and The Great Western Arms, both serving good food.  A Post Office, which includes the village shop is a short stroll from the cottage.  Blockley is fortunate in having a delicatessen/coffee house situated close to the church.

The history of Blockley was linked to the wool trade as were many Cotswolds villages.  When this declined during the 18th century, the village turned to silk production to supply Coventry's ribbon makers.  The silk mills utilised the brook that flows through the village for power.  Unfortunately for the workers, tax on imported silk was removed during the 19th century, so again the local industry declined.  These events culminated in a return to the production of cider, flax and flour along with wood-cutting and threshing.
